It was previously established as “mule camp springs” due to the crossing of two Indian trails followed by settlers in 1800s. Gainesville is built upon its historical legacy as a regional transportation and trade centre for almost two centuries. The city was given the name Gainesville in 1821 after the military surveyor General Edmund Gaines whom was a veteran of the War of 1812 and a noted military surveyor and roadbuilder.

Gainesville began to grow in 1871 when the Airline Railroad began to stop in Gainesville therefore increasing its ties to other businesses in turn stimulating business and population growth. After World War II, Gainesville was given the name “Poultry Capital of the World” when a man named Jesse Jewell began the poultry industry that soon became the state’s largest agricultural crop and earned $1 billion a year.

With the need to continue growing, Gainesville with the guidance of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, constructed Lake Sidney Lanier by building the Buford Dam on the Chattahoochee River and flooding the river’s valleys. The lake was constructed primarily for hydroelectricity and flood control however it also serves as a reservoir providing water to the city of Atlanta as well as a large tourist attraction. A highlight of Lake Lanier was in 1996 when it hosted the Summer Olympics for the rowing and kayaking medal competitions.

Gainesville can be found at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and is approximately 50 miles northeast of Atlanta and is surrounded by Lake Sidney Lanier on three sides.
